United Way Convenes Summit on High School Graduation

High school graduation is a community-wide concern.  In the vast majority of cases, high school dropouts are more likely to earn less than graduates over a lifetime, more likely to go to prison and more likely to receive public assistance.
For these reasons, United Way of Coastal Georgia is convening a community-wide Graduation Summit April 14th at the Golden Isles Career Academy. The Summit, a component of the United Way of Coastal Georgia’s High School Graduation Blueprint Project, seeks to engage a broad group of key stakeholders in identifying the barriers or challenges facing Glynn County to improve high school graduation rates, activities that are underway that are attempting to improve the situation, and areas for further development in the creating a High School Graduation Blueprint.
The goal is a higher on-time high school graduation rate. Community vision and collaboration, coupled with strategic partnerships, will support teens graduating from high school on-time and will help meet this community goal.
This will not be a typical summit with a series of presentations. The bulk of the summit will be comprised of small group discussions among people who care about the topic. Using a unique consensus-building approach, youth, parents, teachers, youth serving organizations, government agencies, faith-based, and civic organizations will all come together and engage in open discussions to create practical recommendations leading to a community-driven plan that supports aspirations for education excellence and will impact the education opportunities for all the young people of Glynn County.
The recommendations coming out of the Summit will not result in a report that sits on a shelf. These recommendations will result in a Community Blueprint of multidimensional strategies designed to bolster the high school graduation rate in Glynn County such as early identification of students at risk of dropping out, engaging students in learning, supporting education within the family, leveraging community supports, and connecting teachers, students, and families with resources.
The Summit is a core part of the High School Graduation Blueprint Project, a new approach by United Way to invest community resources intended to make long term, tangible and sustainable change.  The Blueprint Project fits perfectly with United Way’s goal to advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all. Focused on Education, Income, and Health, the building blocks for a god quality of life, they are recruiting people and organizations who bring passion, expertise, and resources needed to make the Blueprint a reality.
The Summit will be facilitated through the expertise of the staff and volunteers of United Way of Coastal Georgia & the Georgia Center for Non-Profits.
The event is free but registration is required. Seating is limited, so early registration is highly recommended.  Registration closes when the maximum number of participants is reached or April 12th, whichever comes first.
Please contact Cody Cocchi at (912) 265-1850 or vista@uwcga.org to reserve your seat at this important community event.
