United Way of Coastal Georgia is excited to let you know that our 2010 Day of Caring project will be Children at Play, a community build playground in the park between Brooklyn Homes and McIntyre Court Apartments. Although the park is owned by the Housing Authority, The Boys and Girls Club will oversee the finished public play areas for community enjoyment, as it is adjacent to one of the B&G Clubs which currently serves over 120 children each day. The park will also serve the children and families that live in the surrounding areas as there is no park in the vicinity. Some of the aspects of the project will be: the installation of two separate play structures for different age groups of children, repainting of the basketball court, installation of new basketball goals, installation of football and soccer goals, installation of trees and mulch, general clean up of the area, interior projects at the Boys and Club unit, and some non-physical activities on-site. We are looking forward to having hopefully 200 volunteers on-site over the two days. The project is made possible in large part through the efforts of local resident William Gussman who was instrumental in securing the majority of the funding from Coca Cola and private contributions.
You may be familiar with this community wide volunteer effort from past years. Day of Caring unites generous, service-minded people under the common mission of creating meaningful and lasting change in the lives of those in our community. This event proves that when we as individuals, can think beyond ourselves, we have the power to facilitate change. In a departure from previous years when the Day of Caring has been in the fall, the United Way Board of Directors felt strongly about moving the Day of Caring to the spring and about having one large project where all the volunteers are at one location, and also by doing so the community will have the benefit of the playground for the summer. Volunteers will come together at this single location on May 20th & 21st for the actual build days and on June 1, 2010 for the Grand Opening and community day. This is a collaborative effort between the United Way, Boys & Girls Club, Coca-Cola, Local Rotary Clubs, and many others. Many thanks to our event sponsors, click on 2010 Days of Caring Sponsors to see the full list.
Note - Playground equipment funds donated through Coca-Cola company were made possible by Live Positively Marketing (dollars earned as a result of Coca-Cola North America's online campaign in conjunction with the Super Bowl that asked people to donate their time, money or My Coke Rewards points to Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), and, in turn, Coke would honor their commitment with a contribution).
