2012 Volunteer of the Year

Don Myers honored as 2012 Volunteer of the Year for Glynn County
The United Way of Coastal Georgia is pleased to present, in recognition of outstanding volunteer service and leadership, the 2012 Coastal Georgia Volunteer of the Year for Glynn County to Don Myers.

Don Myers was a very easy choice for this award for a multitude of reasons, and has been a tremendous asset to this community since he and his wife Susan moved to St. Simons Island.  It is not always the case that an individual takes all his professional experience, and in retirement, decides to put all those skills to work immediately and at a pace and depth that might mirror their level of commitment to the goals in their professional career, but that is the case with Don.  The difference is that he is not motivated by earning a living but by building a better community and a stronger future for all of us and for generations to come.

Don tirelessly volunteers for many organizations in the community.  He currently serves on multiple committees for the College of Coastal Georgia Foundation, assisted in establishing a Major Gifts program for the College and serves as an active volunteer with The Coastal Youth Symphony of Georgia, a community partner of the College.  Don is an active director on the board of the St. Simons Land Trust.  His expertise and leadership has been instrumental in guiding the Land Trust in two capital campaigns. Additionally, Don also serves and volunteers for the Coastal Georgia Historical Society, the Coastal Symphony of Georgia, is a founding member of The Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation, serves on the United Way Community Investment committee and High School Graduation Blueprint Project Team.

Don is that volunteer who always follows through and gets the job done.  He always takes ownership of a task or project, and his abilities and skill set are remarkable.  He is the person that when a difficult endeavor is going to be undertaken always makes the short list of who “MUST” be involved.

This recognition only a small token of United Way’s and our community’s appreciation of all that Don does for our community.

The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size,
but by the depth of the commitment
to make a difference in the lives of others.
